Nigeria’s #EndSars Protest Donation Investigation Report

SUMMARY OF THE EVENT:

#EndSARS is a decentralized social movement, and series of mass protests against police brutality in Nigeria. The protest takes its name from the slogan started in 2017 as a Twitter campaign using the hashtag #EndSARS to demand the disbanding of the unit by the Nigerian government. After experiencing a revitalization in October 2020 following more revelations of the abuses of SARS unit, mass demonstrations occurred throughout the major cities of Nigeria, accompanied by vociferous outrage on social media platforms. About 28 million tweets bearing the hashtag have been accumulated on Twitter alone. Solidarity protests and demonstrations by Nigerians in diaspora and sympathizers occurred in many major cities of the world. The protests are notable for its patronage by a demographic that is made of entirely young Nigerians. Within a few days of protests, on 11 October 2020, the Nigerian Police Force announced that it was dissolving the unit with immediate effect. -Wikipedia

OBJECTIVE OF THE INVESTIGATION:

The main objective of this investigation and analysis is to identify and understand the flow of #EndSars donation fund, identify the addresses involved in the transactions, establish connections between different cryptocurrency wallets, and uncover patterns and relationships within the wallet addresses too.

The #EndSARS protests have been sustained by voluntary donations made by Nigerian citizens and the international community. There were voluntary donations of Cryptocurrencies for protesters from individual around the world. On 13th October 2020, the Feministco announced via their official twitter account that;

“If you still want to donate here’s our BTC address: 1CWdxSTKang1toEv2an1AY3z8cuwiapyno”.

ANALYSIS AND FINDINGS ON THE WALLET:

1. The End Sars donation BTC wallet, 1CWdxSTKang1toEv2an1AY3z8cuwiapyno was created and first seen on 13th October 2020. And the last activity of the wallet seen on blockchain was on the 10th march, 2021.
2. The address has transacted 250 times on the Bitcoin blockchain. It has also received a total sum of 1.47310348 BTC ($39,883.73) and has sent a total of 1.47301348 BTC ($39,881.29).
3. The current value of this address as at 20th September 2023 is 0.00009000 BTC ($2.44).
4. The total incoming transaction on the wallet is 248 and the total outgoing transaction on the wallet is 2.
